Getting Organized: Target Organization Profile and Analysis

There are tangible and intangible factors to consider when generating a target list of organizations. Many of the intangible factors were assessed during the process of self-exploration. These include work environment and leadership style. But there are also important tangible factors to take into consideration. Listed below are factors to review as you prepare to create your target list of organizations.

Annual Availability
If you are a physical therapist and your target organization is a large hospital in Phoenix, Arizona, then you want to identify how many large hospitals in Phoenix, Arizona currently exist.
 
Total number of Organizations that fit your criteria within the desired location:

Next, determine how many positions with your desired title are likely to be available in each of those companies. For example, there may be six physical therapist positions in each of the hospitals you are targeting.
 
Total number of Positions with your desired Title within those organizations:

(Total Organizations multiplied by total Positions)


In order to determine the total number of positions likely to become available within your target profile, you will need to estimate the average length of time people stay in the same position. Remember that the average length of employment in today's fluid market place is about 3-5 years.

Note: Most mid-level and high-level executive positions turnover every 2 to 3 years. Keep in mind that employees retire, move, quit, get fired, die, and become disabled. New positions are also created as a result of organization growth.

What is your Competitive Advantage level?
If your target profile is the same industry, same profession, same geographic location, same size and same compensation range as your previous employer, your competitive advantage level is 80%, superior!

If your target profile is the same in at least three of the five criteria, with one or two being the same industry or profession, your competitive advantage level is 60%, very good.

If your target profile is the same in at least two of the five criteria, with one being the same industry or profession, your competitive advantage level is 40%, about average.

If your target profile is the same in at least one of the five criteria, your competitive advantage level is 20% or below average.

Placement Factor
Annual job availability multiplied by competitive advantage level equals placement factor. For example, if there are 30 positions available annually and you have a Very Good (60%) competitive advantage, then it is likely that you will be considered for 18 opportunities in the course of a year.

Estimated Length of Search is determined by how many opportunities are available to you over the course of a year. If there are a lot of opportunities, it will not take you as long to secure a position. A general estimation is shown on the following chart:

Using the chart above, you can see that if there are 18 opportunities available, then it will take you approximately 7 months to achieve your career goal.
