Networking Letters and Cover Letters

Writing letters is another very effective way to communicate with your network and ultimately with prospective employers. Networking letters and cover letters are effective when they create a commonality between you and the reader.

Networking letters and cover letters are typically considered less important documents than resumes and, therefore, receive less attention. However, a well-written letter is very important in creating a compelling reason for your network or a hiring manager to respond to your qualifications.

The purpose of a resume is to communicate your accomplishments, experiences and skills. The purpose of a networking letter or cover letter is to explain to your network or hiring manager how your accomplishments, experiences and skills add value to the specific needs of the organization or business. This presents an opportunity for the person to respond to something of value rather than feel like performing a favor for you.

A networking letter is virtually the same as a cover letter except a networking letter is sent to someone other than the hiring manager. The networking letter creates a compelling reason for your network to help you reach a hiring manager. A cover letter gives a compelling reason for the hiring manager to pursue an interview with you. You will see examples of both types of letters at the end of this chapter.
